Below are the thirteen items that came up most frequently when I put these questions to my clients. The point that struck me immediately upon putting this list together was that all of these elements my clients felt they were struggling with right now—present day—were internal in nature.

The Key to the Wish List

The process involves strategies for staying in the present. For the athlete, it’s dealing with just the next shot, play or game. So let’s take a look at the top 4 items most frequently selected by top performers and spend the time to explain in brief what each of them means—starting with the top and working our way down.

Increase Concentration

Almost everyone can benefit from improving this element of the Mind Game. And how do you increase concentration? The beginning of the strategy is simple: identifying what distracts you. But the next step can be a little more difficult: figuring out how to eliminate those distractions QUICKLY.

Identify and Control Self-Talk

What is self-talk? Good question. For some, self-talk is the constant chatter within their minds. For others, it’s a little more situation-specific. Self-talk is the internal dialogue or mental audio you encounter within your mind every day. It’s the way in which you talk to yourself.

Many people don’t take the time to listen to how they talk to themselves within their minds. And if you don’t take the time to listen, you’ll never know whether your own self-talk is working for you or creating havoc for your performance. If you hope to achieve any kind of self-improvement, you cannot let negative self-talk get in your way.

So…. where to start…. right now…. and take the time to notice how you talk to yourself. Keep that in mind for later.

Identify and Control Distraction

Distraction can get in the way of the outcomes you want most. But how important are these distractions?

Try this…

Stand up. Support yourself by placing your left hand on the back of a chair. Now pick up your right foot and begin to rotate the tip of your foot clockwise in the air. While your right foot is going round and round Now draw a big number “6” in the air with your right hand.

What happened to your foot? It reversed direction, didn’t it? Okay, okay. That happens to almost everyone.

The question from this exercise is not why this phenomenon happens… The question that impacts performance is, can you afford even a second of distraction? The answer most professional athletes give is no. What is distraction costing you? How do you control it?

Control Anger and Stress

Of all distractions, these two tend to be the most significant. They get in the way of so many things in life, affecting performance and altering outcomes.

I have a client who is an ultramarathon runner. She is focused and talented enough to run 135 miles through the unforgiving heat of Death Valley. Personally, I can’t even imagine completing one of her training runs: fifty miles on Saturday mornings on a regular basis. Anyway, why do I bring her up here? Well, she once told me, “I can’t run well if I’m angry. Carrying anger drains me.”

Anger has so much power that it can bring down even one of the toughest kinds of athlete. So my The next step was to learn a series of strategies that could help her deal with that anger at a more appropriate time.

Eventually you’ll find you begin doing it without even realizing it. Like many of the strategies you can learn will begin to become subconscious and automatic.

What Now?

Because the mind is constantly in flux, the Wish List is not static. For most people, every day is different; each day comes with new challenges, new distractions, and new desired outcomes. The goal here is to draw from the list I have presented above and add to it any other points you would like to improve upon. Once you have done that, you can begin to select the three most important categories on a day-to-day basis. This all falls under Preparation for Competition

For athletes, the items of importance change as they approach different opposing teams. Each week brings a new team to the table. Each new team brings a new challenge. Each challenge must be met with a new desired outcome. For business people, the change in challenges and outcomes is even more concentrated. It can happen for each meeting, each upcoming project, each sales goal, etc.
